Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey is a 2014 American science documentary television series.[1] The show is a follow-up to the 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which was presented by Carl Sagan on the Public Broadcasting Service and is considered a milestone for scientific documentaries. This series was developed to bring back the foundation of science to network television at the height of other scientific-based television series and films. The show is presented by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who was inspired by Sagan as a young college student. Among the executive producers are Seth MacFarlane, whose clout and financial investment were instrumental in bringing the show to broadcast television, and Ann Druyan, Sagan's widow and a co-creator of the original series.[2][3] The series loosely follows the same thirteen-episode format and storytelling approach that the original Cosmos used, including elements such as the "Ship of the Imagination", but features information updated since the 1980 series along with extensive computer-generated graphics and animation footage augmenting the narration. The show is produced by Brannon Braga, and Alan Silvestri provides the backing score.[4]
The series premiered on March 9, 2014,[5] simultaneously in the US across ten 21st Century Fox networks. The remainder of the series will air on Fox, with the National Geographic Channel rebroadcasting the episodes the next night with extra content.[6] The series has been rebroadcast internationally in dozens of other countries by local National Geographic and Fox stations. Obama: Uh, you know what, Zach? It's no problem. I mean, I have to say, when I heard that, like people actually watch this show, I was actually pretty surprised.
Galifianakis: Shh, shh! Hi, welcome to another edition of "Between Two Ferns." I'm your host, Zach Galifianakis and uh, my guest today is Barack Obam (looks at paper) President Barack Obama.
Obama: Good to be with you, Zach.
Galifianakis: First question. In 2013, you pardoned a turkey. What do you have planned for 2014?
Obama: We'll probably pardon another turkey. We do that every Thanksgiving. Was that depressing to you? Seeing that, uh, one turkey kinda taken out of circulation? A turkey you couldn't eat?
Galifianakis: So, how does this work? Do you send Ambassador Rodman to North Korea on your behalf? I read somewhere that you'll be sending Hulk Hogan to Syria, or is that more of a job for Tonya Harding?
Obama: Zach, he's, he's not our ambassador.
Galifianakis: What should we do about North Ikea? (Looks at paper) Kor? North?
Obama: Why don't we move on?
Galifianakis: I have to know. What is it like to be the last black president?
Obama: Seriously? What's it like for this to be the last time you ever talk to a president?
Galifianakis: It must kinda stink though, that you can't run, you know, three times. You know?
Obama: No. Actually, I think it's a good idea. Uh, if I ran a third time, it'd be sorta like doing a third "Hangover" movie. It didn't really work out very well, did it?
Obama: Now I have to say that I've seen this show before and, uh, some of the episodes have probably been a little better than this. You know, for example, the one with Bradley Cooper, that was a great show.
Galifianakis: (muffled) Bradley Cooper?
Obama: He kinda carried that movie, didn't he?
Galifianakis: Uh, which, which film are you speaking of?
Obama: Uh, those "Hangover" movies. He, he, basically, he carried them.
Galifianakis: Yeah, everybody loves Bradley. Good for him.
Obama: Good lookin' guy.
Galifianakis: Being like that in Hollywood, that's easy! Tall, handsome, that's easy. Be short, fat, and smell like Doritos and try to make it in Hollywood.
Galifianakis: Is it going to be hard in two years when, uh, you're no longer president and people will stop letting you win at basketball?
Obama: How, how does it feel having a three-inch vertical?

Obama interrupts: Where's your birth certificate? Why, why don't you show it to us right now?
Galifianakis: I don't want to show anybody my birth certificate cause it's embarrassing.
Obama: What's embarrassing about it?
Galifianakis: My weight on it. It says I was born 7 pounds, 800 ounces.
Galifianakis: You know what I would do if I were president, Mr. President? I would make same-sex divorce illegal, then see how bad they want it.
Obama: I think that's why you're not president. And that's a good thing.
Galifianakis: You said if you had a son, you would not let him play football. What makes you think he would want to play football? What if he was a nerd like you?
Obama: You think a woman like Michelle would marry a nerd? Why don't you ask her whether she thinks I'm a nerd?
Galifianakis: Could I?
Obama: No. I'm not going to let her near you.
Galifianakis: So do you go any websites that are dot-coms, or dot-nets or do you mainly just stick with dot-govs?
Obama: No, actually, we go to dot-govs, have you heard of Health Care-dot-gov."
Galifianakis: Here we go, okay, let's get this out of the way, what did you come here to plug?
Obama: Well, first of all, I think it's fair to say that I wouldn't be with you here today if I didn't have something to plug. Have you heard of the Affordable Care Act?
Galifianakis: Oh yeah, I heard about that, that's the thing that doesn't work. Why would you get the guy that created the Zune to make your website?
Obama: Health Care-dot-gov works great now and millions of Americans have already gotten health insurance plans and what we want is for people to know that you can get affordable health care and most young Americans, right now they're not covered and the truth is they can get coverage all for what it costs to pay your cell phone bill.
Galifianakis: Is this what they mean by drones?
Obama: The point is that a lot of young people think they're invincible.
Galifianakis: Did you say invisible? Because uh...
Obama: No, no, not invisible, invincible. Meaning that they don't think they can get hurt.
Galifianakis: I'm just saying that nobody could be invisible, if you had said invisible.
Obama: I understand that. If they get that health insurance they can really make a big difference, and they've got until March 31st to sign up.
Galifianakis: I don't have a computer so how does ...
Obama: Well, then you can call 1-800-318-2596.
Galifianakis: Oh, I don't have a phone, I'm off the grid, I don't want you people like, looking at my texts. Know what I mean?
Obama: First of all, Zach, nobody's interested in your texts. But second of all, you can do it in person, and the law means that insurers can't discriminate against you if you've got a preexisting condition anymore.
Galifianakis: Yeah, but what about this, though? (Rolls up sleeve and shows Obama his arm)
Obama: That's disgusting. How long have you had that?
Galifianakis: Oh, just four months.
Obama: Really?
Galifianakis: Spider bites. I got attacked by spiders.
Obama: Zach, you need to get that checked right away, you need to get on Health Care-dot-gov, because that's one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen.
Galifianakis: Is your plug finally over?
Obama: Uh, I suppose so.
Galifianakis: So which country were you rooting for in the Winter Olympics?
Obama: Seriously? I'm the president of the United States. What do you think, Zach?
Galifianakis: I want to thank President Obama for being on the show.
Obama: I'm going to press this.
Galifianakis: Don't touch that, please! (Obama presses red button, the backdrop falls to reveal the show is being filmed in the White House)

Obama: Seriously? Who gave him clearance?

세월호와 카트리나 참사
[시론] 세월호를 보며 카트리나를 되돌아본다
뉴올리언스는 70%가 해수면보다 낮은 사발 모양이다. 어느 곳으로든 물이 들어오면 도시 전체가 물에 잠기게 돼 있다. 그런데도 미국 정부는 예방 조치에 소홀했고 재난 대응도 태만했다. 그런 점에서 뉴올리언스 참사는 인재였다. 당시 현지에서 허리케인 카트리나 구호 경험을 담은 『위기의 72시간』이란 책에 기술했듯이 72시간, 즉 3일은 재난에 대응하는 최후의 시간이다. 그 안에 국가 지도자와 재해 관련 기관들의 신속한 정책 결정이 이뤄지지 않으면 엄청난 재앙을 초래한다는 의미다.
뉴올리언스 참사는 오래전부터 예견돼 왔다. 연방재난관리청(FEMA)은 2001년 보고서를 통해 장차 일어날 가능성이 있는 참사로 샌프란시스코 대지진, 뉴욕시 테러 공격, 뉴올리언스의 허리케인 등 세 가지를 열거하고, 그중 뉴올리언스 허리케인을 가장 치명적인 것으로 경고했다. 그러나 이라크전으로 방재예산이 삭감돼 허리케인에 대한 효율적인 대응이 이뤄지지 못했다. 불행히도 예언은 적중했다. 그해에 가공할 9·11 테러 공격이 벌어지고 4년 뒤엔 뉴올리언스 대참사가 일어난 것이다.
부시 행정부의 책임론이 고조됐다. 정가에서는 청문회가 그치지 않았다. 재해에 대한 마스터플랜의 부족에서부터 뉴올리언스 제방보수 예산 삭감에 이르기까지 총체적인 부실의 결과였다. 재해 관련 기관들은 무기력하고 무능력했다. 관료들의 미적거림은 늑장 지원의 원인이 됐다. 여기에 관료주의적인 경쟁의식이 재앙을 더욱 부채질했다.
재난을 ‘참사’로 키운 것은 위기관리 시스템의 부재 탓이 아니었다. 위기에 빠진 국민보다 자기 자리만 지키려는 영혼 없는 정치인, 국토안보부와 연방재난관리청, 지방정부, 국방부 관리 등 모두의 잘못이었다. 미국은 9·11 사태가 발생하자 테러 및 재난 관리 업무를 통합해 국토안보부를 신설하고 재난대응시스템을 대폭 강화했다. 그러나 세계 최고 수준의 재난대응시스템은 허리케인 카트리나 앞에서 힘없이 무너져 내렸다. 아무리 완벽한 시스템도 그것을 운영하는 사람들이 제 역할을 하지 못하면 무용지물에 불과하다는 뼈아픈 교훈을 남긴 것이다.
박근혜 대통령은 안전한 대한민국을 만들기 위해 국가안전처를 신설하겠다고 했다. 분초를 다투는 위기 상황에서 가장 중요한 것은 신속한 초동 조치다. 갖가지 재난에 효율적으로 대응할 수 있는 조직의 전문성과 유연성도 필요하다. 국가안전처를 만들고 시스템을 정비할 때 반드시 고려해야 할 요소들이다. 하지만 이 모든 것에 앞서 가장 절실한 것은 다름 아닌 우리 모두의 변화다. 그 어떤 획기적인 안전기구라도 무거운 책임감과 뜨거운 사명감이 깃들지 못하면 또 하나의 옥상옥과 다를 바 없다. 아무리 잘 짜인 재난대응 매뉴얼도 국민의 성숙한 안전의식이 뒷받침되지 못하면 한낱 종잇조각에 불과할 뿐이다. 세월호 사건이 ‘참사’로만 머물지 않도록 우리 모두가 변화해야 하는 이유도 바로 여기에 있다.

세월호 참사로 인해 온 국민이 슬픔에 잠겨 있다. 이번 사건이 ‘총체적 부실이 낳은 인재’라는 점에서 안타까움을 넘어 비통함을 감출 수 없다. 다시는 이 땅에서 이 같은 비극이 되풀이돼서는 안 될 것이다. 이를 위해 가장 시급한 것은 무엇일까. 많은 이가 재난대응시스템의 재정비를 꼽는다. 하지만 하드웨어만 뜯어고친다고 안전이 보장되는 것은 아니다. 근본적인 의식 변화와 뼈를 깎는 노력이 뒤따르지 않는 한 ‘안전 한국’은 기대하기 어렵다. 2005년 8월 미국도 금세기 최악의 허리케인 ‘카트리나’ 참사를 겪었다. 당시 필자는 현지 총영사로서 재난 현장의 한가운데서 한인 동포들에 대한 대피 및 구호 활동을 펴며 미국 정부가 재난에 대처하는 모습을 지켜봤다. 한마디로 총체적 난맥이었다. 시속 250㎞의 강풍을 동반한 허리케인 카트리나로 인해 제방이 붕괴하면서 아름다운 재즈의 고향 뉴올리언스는 도시 전체의 80%가 물에 잠겼다. 1836명이 숨지고 실종자를 합하면 2500명 이상의 인명 피해를 낳은 대참사였다. 그럼에도 재난 지역에 거주하는 수천 명의 동포는 다친 사람 하나 없었다. 현지 공관을 통한 신속한 초동 대처가 낳은 기적이었다.

과장의 효과는 그 폭에 있다.
긴가 민가할 정도를 조금 넘어서는 폭.
너무 지나치면 '에이, 설마' 란 수용자 정서로 역효과 나는 법.
5월 11일 뉴욕타임즈 일요판과 16일 워싱턴포스트에 실린 전면 광고가 그 좋은 예.
미국 내 극소수 (4천여명) '이념적' 교민이 '큰 돈' 모아 세월호 참사를 빙자해 박근혜 정부를
마치 북조선의 무자비한 독재체제에 비유한 광고다.
"Criticism of President Park's handling of the ferry disaster by South Korea's mainstream media is being silenced by government censorship...
"...the South Korean government placed these families under surveillance by censoring their private social media accounts and sending undercover policemen to watch them...
"The world is watching Korean democracy sink like the ferry Sewol..."

'세월호 희생자 가족 개개인들의 소셜네트워크서비스 계좌를 감시하고 비밀경찰을 보내 그들을 독시하게 했다'고?
-현장에 내려 간 국무총리에게 욕설하고 고함지르고 웃옷 벗기고 물세례하고 물통과 빈깡통 던지며 당장 수색작업하라고 '지시'한 건 실종자 가족이었거늘.
'전 세계가 세월호 처럼 한국의 민주주의도 침몰하고 있는 걸 주시하는 중이라고?"
-오마이갓. 세계가 주시하는 건 한국 민주주의의 침몰이 아니라 법과 질서 없는 방종한 고성 제일주의가 언제쯤이나 경제 위상에 걸맞는 성숙한 민주주의로 성장할까 겠지.
'인권, 언론의 자유, 집회의 자유에 대한 침해를 즉각 종식하라'고? '민주주의와 자유를 회복시키자'고?
-PSY의 자유분방하고 '외설적'이기까지 한 '갱남 스타일' '마더 파더 젠틀먼'의 나라에 언론의 자유가 없다하면 누가 믿겠나?
이런 과대 광고의 역효과는 본의 아니게 고스란히 김정은에게 돌아간다.
광고를 읽는 미국인들은 즉각 광고 지탄의 대상이 김정은의 북한이라고 생각할테니 말이다. 인권유린 자유제한 언론탄압이란 주장에 KOREA란 국명이 들어가 있으니 안 그렇겠나? 어차피 미국인들은 나치나 스탈린체제보다 더 지독한 인권유린 국가가 북한이라는 걸 수없이 듣고 보았다. 수용소 출신 탈북자들의 수기와 책을 통해. BBC와 CNN과 PBS의 다큐멘터리를 통해. 수용소 14호 탈출, 크로싱 같은 북한인권 영화를 통해. 그리고 최근에는 유엔 북한인권조사위원회 보고서를 통해. 또 수많은 YOUTUBE 동영상을 통해.
물론 광고에는 SOUTH KOREA라고 인쇄됐다. 하지만 남, 북한 국기도 구분할 줄 몰라 올림픽 경기장에 바꿔 다는 나라의 국민이 그게 민주 한국인지 공산 북한인지 알 게 뭔가. 그냥 '인권유린, 자유침해'란 말이 나오면 그건 무조건 김정은의 나쁜 나라로 아는 것이다.
이번 광고는 그래서 헛물만 켠거고 그 역효과는 엉뚱하게 김정은에게 돌아간 거다.

이런 과대 광고의 역효과는 본의 아니게 고스란히 김정은에게 돌아간다.
광고를 읽는 미국인들은 즉각 광고 지탄의 대상이 김정은의 북한이라고 생각할테니 말이다. 인권유린 자유제한 언론탄압이란 주장에 KOREA란 국명이 들어가 있으니 안 그렇겠나? 어차피 미국인들은 나치나 스탈린체제보다 더 지독한 인권유린 국가가 북한이라는 걸 수없이 듣고 보았다. 수용소 출신 탈북자들의 수기와 책을 통해. BBC와 CNN과 PBS의 다큐멘터리를 통해. 수용소 14호 탈출, 크로싱 같은 북한인권 영화를 통해. 그리고 최근에는 유엔 북한인권조사위원회 보고서를 통해. 또 수많은 YOUTUBE 동영상을 통해.
물론 광고에는 SOUTH KOREA라고 인쇄됐다. 하지만 남, 북한 국기도 구분할 줄 몰라 올림픽 경기장에 바꿔 다는 나라의 국민이 그게 민주 한국인지 공산 북한인지 알 게 뭔가. 그냥 '인권유린, 자유침해'란 말이 나오면 그건 무조건 김정은의 나쁜 나라로 아는 것이다.
이번 광고는 그래서 헛물만 켠거고 그 역효과는 엉뚱하게 김정은에게 돌아간 거다.

With Great Korean Barbecue Comes Great Responsibility

Go hunting for the best barbecue in America and you might end up in a city that surprises you: Los Angeles. Specifically, the L.A. neighborhood known as Koreatown.
I'm talking about Korean barbecue. If you're unfamiliar, that's thinly sliced, marinated meat grilled right in front of you. Trust me, it's awesome (this guy knows what I'm talking about).
I've been eating a lot of Korean barbecue lately and there is something that I keep noticing.

You can find these buttons on the tables of practically every K-Town, as Koreatown is affectionately called, barbecue joint. A bit of journalistic research (tapping the button during a meal) led me to discover their purpose: to call over the server.
Duh, right? That's what some of you are probably thinking. And it's what my Angeleno friends told me. But I'm new to the city and I was curious: Where did these call buttons come from? Why are they so popular at Korean barbecue joints? These questions took me straight to David Kang, head of the Korean Studies Institute at the University of Southern California.
"These call buttons are relatively new," Kang told me. "In Korea it's still common that, if you want something, you yell' yogi-yo' or 'here!' and you wave your arm. Then they come running over and they're like, "what do you want?"
Call buttons have only become common to Koreatown in the last generation or so, Kang says, as non-Koreans increasingly began to venture into Korean restaurants. He says they are the product of two very different dining cultures.
"The American internal logic is the waiter comes over, they introduce themselves, they're friendly, they keep checking up on you. The Korean internal logic is, you're there to eat. And [the waitstaff] don't bother you unless you call them over."
The restaurant Park's BBQ serves exquisite grilled meat out of a strip mall in Koreatown. The facade is a little grimy, but on a Wednesday afternoon the parking lot is packed with BMWs and Mercedes. David Chang, a server at Park's BBQ, says that people ask about the call buttons all the time — it's a sign they might be tourists.
"They are like, 'What does this do?' "Chang says. "Or sometimes they press it and I go over there and they are like 'I don't know what this was for,' and I am like, 'So you just... pressed it?' "
Jake Ayers was visiting from Seattle when I caught up with him at Park's BBQ. He didn't know what to do with the button on his table. But when I told him what it was for, he gave it a try.
Then he tried it again.
That's a faux pas says David Chang, the server at Park's BBQ. He has this advice for K-town newbies: Definitely hit the call button when you need something. But then just wait. Don't hit it again.
